Madigosky, S. R. 2009. The art of deception using camouflage, mimicry, and chemical protection. Pages 71–79 in Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute, ed. Invertebrates in Education and Conservation Proceedings. Tucson, AZ.

Abstract:

For millions of years the interplay between insects and their environment has helped to hone the extraordinary physical and behavioral adaptations displayed within each taxon. The ability of insects to reproduce quickly and in large numbers coupled with natural selection pressures has helped them become successful on every continent on Earth. Perhaps this alone provides impetus for examining some of the strategies employed by insects to assure their survivability. Herein, this paper will highlight but a few of the more spectacular ways insects defend, conceal, and protect themselves from predators.
