Thomas, W. W. 1990. A new species of Picramnia (Simaroubaceae) from Amazonian Peru. Brittonia 42:171–174.

Abstract:

A new and rare species, Picramnia bullata, is described, illustrated, and compared to its closest relatives. It is unique in its hirsute pubescence, numerous, elongate, bullate leaflets, and long, pendent, unbranched inflorescences. Picramnia is the largest and most complex genus in the Simaroubaceae and comprises 40 species in the American tropics. In 1986, while collecting near Iquitos, Peru, Alwyn Gentry and Rodolfo Vasquez collected specimens of a Picramnia that was clearly distinct from any known species. In 1989, I visited the area to recollect and study this unusual plant. I was able to ascertain that the plants of this population are morphologically completely distinct from any known taxon of Picramnia and represent a species new to science.
